Carmel Convent School hosted a vibrant Punjabi Mela in its auditorium, transforming the place into a lively celebration of Punjab's rich culture and traditions! The program began by welcoming the principal Sister Sefali and special guests Harmala ma’am and Nilofer ma’am. They were led inside the auditorium by students holding a phulkari over their heads. This was followed by prayers and shabad kirtan and an insightful presentation about Punjab-its history, geography, spirituality, cuisine and popular culture. Next was a play about the partition of Punjab, this painful historic event was shown through the eyes of children. After the play, the audience was regaled with a unique fashion show, displaying Punjabi outfits for different generations, occasions and famous singers. Traditional Punjabi songs have a special place during a wedding, and the school choir presented it with all the nuances. Humour is a big part of Punjabi culture and this was showcased in a stand-up comedy sketch. No program about Punjab is complete without the world-famous dances of this state. The energetic bhangra and gidda performances had the audiences on their feet. In the end the principal Sister Sefali addressed the audience and thanked ma’am Harbhag, ma’am Simmi and ma’am Vandna Sharma for this most awaited treat for students and teachers alike. The principal was presented a traditional phulkari and a Punjabi couple doll.
